ThoughtWorkers pitched in with their books recommendation and we ended up getting a great collection of books. A Linguist, John Grinder and Mathematician, Richard Bandler created NLP during the seventies with strong interests in successful people, psychology, language, and computer programming. In 1971, Gerald Weinberg published his (now classic) book, The Psychology of Computer Programming. Weinberg is eminently quotable. As I understand it, this book is a cult classic, and I was very curious to read it. (You might want to look at The Psychology of Computer Programming, written before most of these languages were invented, or their inventors were even born. The Computer Language Benchmarks Game is a collection of 429 programs, consisting of 13 benchmark reimplemented across 33 programming languages. In addition to Krebs makes a good argument, I think there are several other reasons why we might want to consider treating computer programming as a core part of the liberal arts education. Critical subject matter should include economics, statistics, mathematics, logic and systems modeling, current (not historical) cultural evolution, psychology, and computer programming. The above explains why Gerald Weinberg, in The Psychology of Computer Programming (written in the 1970s, and still applicable), states that if a programmer becomes indispensable, you should fire him immediately. It is a fantastic resource if you are trying to compare programming the end, anything not worth doing is not worth doing fast. Unfortunately, geek psychology doesn't often lead to this kind of design process. I think the major culprit is Gerald Weinberg's book, The Psychology of Computer Programming: Silvery Anniversary Edition. I recently read (sort of) Frederick Brooks's The Mythical Man-Month. Long time since I wrote any blog.. We recently got new technical books for our office library.
